The 6 Layers of a Modern Roof
Every roof we install is built in the same deliberate order, each layer protecting the one below it. Here's what goes on your home, from the wood deck all the way up to the ridge.
1. Roof Deck
The plywood or OSB sheathing nailed to your rafters. It's the structural foundation everything else attaches to — and rotten decking must be replaced before anything goes back on.
2. Leak Barrier
A self-sealing ice-and-water membrane along eaves, valleys, and penetrations. In the Hudson Valley's freeze-thaw winters, this is your defense against ice dams.
3. Underlayment
A synthetic deck-protection layer rolled over the rest of the roof. It's a secondary water barrier if wind or damage ever gets past the shingles.
4. Starter & Shingles
A starter strip locks down the first course, then field shingles are nailed in overlapping rows — the visible, weather-facing surface of your roof.
5. Flashing
Bent metal sealing the seams around chimneys, walls, valleys, and vents. Most roof leaks start at failed flashing, not the shingles themselves.
6. Ridge & Ventilation
Ridge cap shingles finish the peak while ridge vents let hot, moist attic air escape — protecting the whole roof and your energy bills year-round.
When a Layer Fails — and What It Means for You
Soft, Sagging, or Water-Stained Decking
Because the deck is buried under every other layer, deck problems usually show up indoors first — a sagging roofline, water stains on ceilings, or a spongy feel underfoot when someone's on the roof.
Rotten sheathing can't simply be shingled over; it has to be cut out and replaced. Our crews check the deck during every tear-off, which is one reason we handle full roof replacements in-house rather than covering problems up.
Ice Dams and Valley Leaks
The ice-and-water membrane matters most exactly where roofs fail most: eaves and valleys. When it's missing or undersized, Hudson Valley winters push melting snow back up under the shingles and into your home.

Where Shingles Don't Belong
Porches, additions, and many commercial buildings have slopes too shallow for shingles, which rely on gravity to shed water. There, a seamless membrane does the job instead.

Common Questions About Roof Layers
Every layer does a distinct job the others can't. Skip the leak barrier and you invite ice-dam leaks; skip proper ventilation and you cook the shingles from below. A code-compliant, warrantied roof includes them by design — a contractor leaving layers out is cutting corners, not saving you money.
It's sometimes physically possible, but we don't recommend it. A layover hides the condition of the decking and underlayment, adds weight, and often voids manufacturer warranties. A full tear-off lets us inspect and repair every layer underneath before the new roof goes on.
Flashing — the metal around chimneys, skylights, walls, and valleys — not the open field of shingles. That's why a leak often doesn't mean you need a whole new roof; it may just mean the flashing needs to be redone correctly.
A quality asphalt shingle system typically lasts 25–30 years with good ventilation and maintenance, while a standing-seam metal roof can last 50 years or more. Ventilation and flashing quality often make a bigger difference in lifespan than the shingle brand alone.
Trapped heat and moisture age a roof from the inside out — warping decking, degrading shingles early, and feeding mold. Balanced intake and ridge exhaust keep the whole system dry and stable, and often lower cooling bills in summer.
